Before You Begin

• Choose your business structure – Sole proprietorship, partnership, or incorporation? Each has different tax implications and liability protection
• Search for your business name – Check availability through the Nova Scotia Registry of Joint Stock Companies (RJSC)
• Reserve your business name – Complete a Name Reservation Request ($61.05 for Atlantic search, valid for 90 days)

The Legal Must-Dos

• Register your business with RJSC – Required for most businesses operating in Nova Scotia
  • Sole proprietorship/Partnership: $68.55 annual fee
  • Nova Scotia incorporation: $454.75 initial ($336.40 incorporation + $118.35 registration), then $118.35 annually
  • Federal incorporation with NS registration: $200 federal fee + NS extra-provincial registration fees
• Get your Business Number (BN) – Automatically assigned after registration, needed for taxes and banking
• Register for HST – Required if you’ll make over $30,000 annually (Note: HST is now 14% in Nova Scotia as of April 1, 2025)
